During the Industrial Revolution, the Highland Forge complex in Baltimore, MD was a producer of wooden veneers. The boiler room of the factory was in many ways the heart of the operation, as the space where steam powering all of the factory’s machinery was made. At one time this location was a campus of brick structures where saws cut mahogany imported from the West Indies to Baltimore. Once split, sliced thin and processed at the veneer factory, these prized woods became layers of pianos, dining room tables and radio cabinets. During World War I, the plant converted to a defense industry turning out thousands of walnut gun stocks.
Soon thereafter, the building at 1 North Haven Street became another kind of epicenter: a new place for residents and office tenants in the redeveloping Baltimore Highlands community. This building is now a mix of office and residential locations. This past fall, Highland Forge developer David Siebert opened The Boiler Room, a farm-to-table restaurant, inside the historic boiler room.
The Boiler Room will add to the renaissance of the once-dilapidated factory in a formerly industrial stretch of the city north of Highlandtown. In the same area, Seibert and his company, Metro Development, have already renovated the buildings that now house Monument City Brewing Co., Urban Axes and the Emerging Technology Centers incubator.
Most new businesses in Baltimore are using existing properties whereas new construction numbers are down. City and county governments incentivize private business to reinvest. Although this has been a challenge for Baltimore, they maintain a heritage of keeping the design and originality of the city in place.
